Pack a pillow and blanket. Go, see the world.
You will never regret it.
It is quiet easy for me to recall memories of my first
traveling experiences. When you’re a child, the world is so grand and exciting,
that even a family car ride one or two states away seems like the boldest of
adventures. I can easily remember that groggy feeling when my mom would wake me
up early to get in the car and the quick shift to excitement as I dragged my
pillow and blanket with me.
The quote above is from a fantastic movie called Namesake. In the movie, a father says
this line to his son. After watching the movie, the quote has stuck with me.
Although I no longer seem to have any room in my bag for a pillow and blanket
from my bed at home, the feeling that the quote gives me continues to warms my
traveling soul. That spirit of travel is something that I felt at the age of
six, and still do at twenty-six. When people learn of my travels, past and
present, I often am told that I am “lucky”. Oddly enough, this used to bother
me for the reason that I didn’t feel like luck had anything to do with it. I
was the master of my fate, and no unseen force was directing me to travel. Yet,
I must admit my opinion has changed. It would be irresponsible of me to not acknowledge
that the life I was born into has afforded me the opportunities to do things
that many people of the world would think of impossible. I have been lucky, and
with that luck I have many hopes. I hope to continue to learn from the amazing
people of the world. I hope to continue to serve others if ever there is a way.
I hope to come closer to understanding this complicated global community we are
all a part of, and how I can most positively contribute to it.
Each time I prepare to travel, to learn, to grow, I understand more
about the world, the people of it, and ultimately myself. I realize that
the spirit of travel is the spirit of learning better comprehending the
differences, and more important similarities of the people of the world. As I
prepare to travel once again, I have started a new blog to help articulate these ideas I have. I hope to fill the blog with the spirit of
travel.
